Lonicera hildebrandiana, also known as the Giant Burmese Honeysuckle, is a remarkable climbing plant that delights with its large, highly fragrant flowers that bloom from summer to frost. With its tubular yellow flowers and glossy green leaves, this impressive vine adds beauty and allure to any garden landscape. Let’s explore the characteristics, cultivation, and other interesting details of Lonicera hildebrandiana.

Family and Origin: Lonicera hildebrandiana belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family of plants. It is native to Southeast Asia, particularly found in regions like Burma (Myanmar) and China. This exquisite vine has captured the attention of horticultural enthusiasts around the world.

Characteristics and Description: As the largest honeysuckle variety, Lonicera hildebrandiana can reach an impressive height of 10 meters or 30 feet. It is an evergreen vine that exhibits tender perennial traits. The plant showcases ovate or oval-shaped glossy green leaves, providing an attractive backdrop for its vibrant flowers.

Flowering Season and Fragrance: Lonicera hildebrandiana produces its show-stopping, fragrant flowers during the summer months and continues to bloom until the arrival of frost. The delightful fragrance emanating from these flowers attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it a wonderful addition to any pollinator-friendly garden.

Cultivation of Lonicera hildebrandiana:

Sunlight: Lonicera hildebrandiana thrives in full sun conditions. In most climates, it is cultivated in greenhouses to provide the necessary warmth and sunlight.

Watering: This vine appreciates regular watering, especially during the initial growth stages. Adequate moisture is crucial during the early growing season, while water requirements can be reduced during the winter months.

Soil: Plant Lonicera hildebrandiana in loam-based compost or humus-rich soil. It is adaptable and can tolerate a range of soil conditions. If grown against a wall, ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Pests and Disease: Lonicera hildebrandiana is generally disease-free, but it may be susceptible to common garden pests such as aphids, spider mites, and powdery mildew. Regular monitoring and the use of insecticidal soaps or neem oil can help control these issues.

Layering involves bending a lower stem to the ground, securing it with a stake, and allowing it to develop roots before separating it from the parent plant. Semi-ripe cuttings can be taken during the growing season, treated with a rooting hormone, and placed in a suitable rooting medium.

Other Interesting Information: Lonicera hildebrandiana is renowned for its ability to provide excellent coverage for fences and walls, creating a lush and vibrant display. However, it’s important to note that the berries produced by this vine are poisonous to humans and animals, so caution should be exercised when handling them.

  1. Hello there,
I am searching desperately for a Lonicera hildebrandiana, Giant Burmese Honeysuckle. I had one in Sydney and also in Coffs Harbour but do not have one in my garden in Boambee. The bushes I had previously all grew wonderfully. Are you able to tell me where I can purchase one? I would really appreciate that.
    Kind regards,
    Annie

    1. Hi Annie, When I searched online I found a Beaufort Garden Centre where you can order it online. I am sure there will be other sources as well.

      Regards,
      Dino
