Hypericaceae, commonly known as the St. John’s Wort Family, belongs to the order Malpighiales. It is a family of flowering plants that consists of approximately 9 genera and around 700 species.

Most members of the Hypericaceae family are native to tropical regions, although there may be one or two species that occur in other climatic zones. They exhibit a wide range of growth forms, including annuals, perennials, and shrubs.

The leaves of Hypericaceae plants are typically simple, meaning they are not divided into leaflets, and they are entire, without serrations or lobes. The leaves are arranged in an opposite pattern along the stems. Some species may have leaves with distinctive spots or markings.

In terms of flowers, Hypericaceae species generally produce clusters of branched inflorescences that form flat-topped structures. Each individual flower is radially symmetrical and consists of four or five sepals and petals. The flowers often have numerous stamens, which may be fused or partially fused together. The stamens typically have long filaments. The ovaries are positioned above the attachment point of the petals and sepals, making them superior.

The fruits of Hypericaceae plants are dehiscent capsules, meaning they split open when mature to release their seeds. Inside the capsules, black seeds can be found.

One of the most well-known genera in the Hypericaceae family is Hypericum, which includes the popular medicinal plant St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum).
