Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’: A Classic White Water Lily

Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’ is a hardy, deciduous aquatic perennial known for its elegant white blooms. This variety belongs to the Nymphaeaceae family, which includes around 70 known species of water lilies. The genus Nymphaea is renowned for its ornamental value, offering a range of hardy and tropical water lilies that thrive in calm, still water environments. ‘Virginalis‘ was hybridized by the famous French horticulturist Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac, who is celebrated for creating many of the hardy water lilies that grace our ponds and water gardens today.

Description

Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’ is a compact, free-flowering water lily that produces cup-shaped, pure white flowers with yellow centers. The flowers are slightly fragrant and bloom from June through September. Each flower measures about 4 to 5 inches (10-13 cm) across, and they rise 2 to 4 inches (5-10 cm) above the water’s surface. The lily pads are dark green with a purple-bronze hue when they first appear, adding an extra layer of visual interest to your pond.

This variety is suitable for any size pond, from small garden tubs to large water gardens. The plant’s spread is between 3 to 5 feet (90-150 cm), and it prefers to grow in water depths ranging from 6 inches to 48 inches (15-122 cm).

Care Instructions for Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’:

Light: Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’ requires full sun to thrive. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day is ideal to promote vigorous blooming.

Water Depth: Plant this water lily at a depth of 6 to 48 inches (15-122 cm). The maximum water depth is for mature water lilies. When planting, lower the water lily gradually so the leaves can stretch to the surface within a few days.

Soil: Plant in aquatic compost or heavy clay-based loam, preferably in an aquatic basket or a 2-gallon solid planting container. This provides stability and allows the plant to anchor properly.

Water: Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’ prefers calm, still water. Avoid planting near fountains, pumps, or other water features that create turbulence.

Maintenance:

  • Fertilization: Feed regularly with aquatic plant fertilizer tablets during the growing season to ensure robust growth and abundant flowering.
  • Pruning: Remove dead leaves and spent flowers regularly to maintain plant health and aesthetics. This also helps prevent the decay of plant material, which can contribute to algae growth.
  • Winter Care: For hardy water lilies like N. ‘Virginalis’, move them to the deepest part of your pond during winter. This helps protect the plant from freezing and thawing cycles. If your pond is shallow, consider overwintering the plant in a container indoors.

Propagation

Division:

  1. Timing: Divide water lilies in early spring before new growth starts.
  2. Preparation: Remove the plant from the pond and gently wash off the soil to expose the rhizomes.
  3. Division: Use a sharp knife to cut the rhizome into sections, each with at least one growing point (eye) and some roots.
  4. Planting: Replant the divisions in aquatic baskets filled with heavy loam or aquatic compost. Lower the newly potted plants back into the pond, ensuring the leaves can reach the water’s surface.

Pests and Diseases

Common Pests:

  • Aphids: These small insects can be sprayed off with water or treated with insecticidal soap.
  • Water Lily Beetles: Remove by hand or use appropriate insecticides.
  • Spider Mites: Can be controlled with water sprays or miticides.

Common Diseases:

  • Crown Rot: Caused by fungal infections, often due to poor water quality. Remove affected parts and improve water conditions.
  • Leaf Spot: Fungal spots on leaves can be minimized by removing affected foliage and improving air circulation.

Features and Benefits

  • Wildlife Value: The lily pads provide landing spots for bees, shelter for pond life, and help reduce algae by shading the water.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The pure white, fragrant flowers of Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’ offer a classic and serene beauty to any water garden.
  • Versatility: Suitable for various pond sizes, from small containers to large water gardens.

Nymphaea ‘Virginalis’ is an excellent choice for any water garden enthusiast looking to add a touch of classic elegance to their pond. With proper care, this hardy water lily will provide stunning blooms and enhance the natural beauty of your aquatic landscape.
