The Tropical Breeze™ Velvet Red Mandevilla, also called Mandevilla ‘Velvet Red’ is a stunning tropical vine known for its deep velvet red flowers that bloom early and abundantly against the backdrop of dark, glossy green foliage. Whether in hanging baskets, containers, or as a climbing vine, this Mandevilla brings a touch of tropical beauty to any space. This evergreen plant thrives in frost-free regions, but in cooler climates, it can be enjoyed as a summer annual.

Family Background and Hybrid Origin

The Mandevilla plant belongs to the Apocynaceae family, and its genus name honors Henry John Mandeville, a British Minister in Buenos Aires. ‘Velvet Red’ is a patented Mandevilla hybrid that resulted from a self-pollination of Mandevilla ‘PSJAM DPI’ (U.S. Plant Patent PP10,413). It is a woody-stemmed, twining tropical vine that can grow up to 7-10 feet in a single season. Notably, the flower color of ‘Velvet Red’ varies with temperature, showcasing shades of pink in cooler temperatures below 85°F and deepening into rich red tones in warmer temperatures exceeding 85°F.

Characteristics: Lush Foliage and Striking Flowers

The ‘Velvet Red’ Mandevilla exhibits lush, glossy dark green leaves that create an attractive contrast with its vibrant red flowers. The large salverform flowers, shaped like trumpets and flaring into five rounded lobes, appear in terminal and axillary racemes throughout the summer to fall blooming period. Each flower measures approximately 5 inches and features a red throat, adding to its allure. The interplay between the dark green foliage and the eye-catching red blooms makes this Mandevilla a show-stopping addition to any garden or landscape.

Cultivation of Mandevilla ‘Velvet Red’:

Sunlight and Watering: For optimal growth and blooming, the Tropical Breeze™ Velvet Red Mandevilla prefers full sun to partial sun exposure. Adequate sunlight is essential to encourage abundant flowering. In terms of watering, it is crucial to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Soil and Fertilization: This Mandevilla ‘Velvet Red’ thrives in a well-drained peat/perlite mix with a slightly acidic pH ranging from 5.5 to 6.0. Regular fertilization is beneficial to promote healthy growth and flowering. Apply a medium-strength fertilizer with approximately 250 ppm to nourish the plant during the growing season.

Winter Hardiness and Overwintering: In USDA Zones 10-11, the Mandevilla ‘Velvet Red’ can be left outdoors year-round as it remains winter hardy. However, in colder regions like St. Louis, it is best to grow this plant in large containers and overwinter it indoors. Provide trellises for the plant to grow upon. As temperatures drop, bring the plant indoors to a warm, sunny room for overwintering. Before placing the plant outside after the last frost date, prune the stems back to promote shrubby growth.

Pest and Disease Management: The ‘Velvet Red’ Mandevilla is generally low maintenance, but it is essential to watch for potential pest and disease issues. Common pests to be mindful of include whiteflies, spider mites, and mealybugs, particularly on overwintering plants. Regular inspections and early treatment can help prevent infestations.

Propagation:

Mandevilla ‘Velvet Red’ can be propagated using seeds or stem cuttings. For seeds, sow them beginning in summer and through the fall months. Patience is necessary as Mandevilla seeds can take about eight weeks to develop enough to transplant. For stem cuttings, choose tender shoots that are around 2-4 inches long with approximately 3-5 nodes. Avoid using woody stems and cut just below the last node.

The Tropical Breeze™ Velvet Red Mandevilla is a true tropical gem that adds a burst of vibrant color to any garden or landscape. Its deep velvet red flowers and lush green foliage make it an eye-catching addition to containers, hanging baskets, or garden beds. With proper care, this versatile vine can thrive in various settings and provide beauty throughout the summer season.
