Bergenia crassifolia is a perennial and is from the genus Bergenia. It is native to North China to Siberia. They also call it the Elephant Ears, Winter Blooming Bergenia, Leather Bergenia, Heartleaf Bergenia, or Pigsqueak. It is part of the Saxifragaceae family of plants.
It grows to about 1.5 feet and blooms in April, May. It is a low maintenance plant and it grows in shade or semi-shade locations. It thrives in moist, well-drained, organically reach soil and the fact that it does well in shade makes for a great ground cover or for borders. The leaves are evergreen but not in very cold climates. You can propagate Bergenia crassifolia from seeds or by dividing them.
