
Malus floribunda
Malus floribunda or Pyrus floribunda is native to Japan and East Asia. It is a deciduous tree commonly known as Japanese Flowering Crabapple, Japanese Crab, Purple Chokeberry, or Showy Crabapple. It is part of the Rosaceae family of plants. It is a small or medium-sized tree with arching branches. Malus floribunda flowers in Spring with crimson buds that bloom into pink and white flowers that are slightly fragrant. After flowering fruit is red and yellow.

Plant Malus floribunda in the sun or partial shade in moderately fertile soil. Established trees are drought-tolerant. Watch out for aphids, red spider mite and caterpillars as well as apple scab and canker, honey fungus, or powdery mildew. Propagate Malus floribunda by seed sown in autumn and by grafting. Malus floribunda attracts birds, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
