Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea ‘Concorde’ is a cultivar with beautiful burgundy leaves and yellow flowers. Berberis thunbergii, or also known as Thunberg’s Barberry or Japanese barberry or Red Barberry from the Berberidaceae family of plants, native to Japan and eastern Asia. Do not confuse this with Berberis canadensis or American Barberry, Berberis vulgaris, or European Barberry. Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea ‘Concorde’ is an ornamental plant with interesting foliage adding color to the landscape almost all year round. In fact, in autumn the burgundy leaves turn even brighter red. The yellow flowers appear in April and May followed by some deep red berries.
Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea ‘Concorde’ could be planted in sun or partial shade. Chose moist but well-drained soil. It is low maintenance as it does not require much pruning except to shape it. Watch out for Berberis sawfly or powdery mildew. Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings. Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea ‘Concorde’ grows to about 1.5m or 5ft. It attracts bees and is resistant to deer, slug, and snails.
