Paeonia Takara

Paeonia Takara is also known as Takara Peony, or Smith Opus 2. Paeonia Takara is an Itoh Peony. Itoh peonies are hybrids or more accurately described intersectional hybrid peonies credited to Toichi Itoh the Japanese Peony breeder from the 1940s who popularized hybridizing tree peonies with herbaceous peonies. The result is usually a compact plant with masses of large fragrant flowers. Paeonia Takara is considered a herbaceous perennial and is part of the Paeoniaceae family of plants.

However, these peonies could take 3 to 5 years to bloom. Donald Robert Smith is the originator of the Paeonia Takara.

Paeonia Takara has flowers about 6in or 15cm. The flowers are cream with purple or pink edges and a darker purple in the center. Paeonia Takara flowers in spring. Paeonia Takara flowers are fragrant and attract butterflies. Paeonia Takara can grow to 3ft or 90cm.

Plant Paeonia Takara in the sun or partial shade, in humus-rick, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Deadhead flowers and cut back foliage during frost.

Paeonia Takara is a long-living plant and can be left undisturbed in the ground for a long time. Propagate Takara Peony by division. Paeonia Takara will probably not need staking as most Itoh hybrids have stronger stems.

Generally, Paeonia Takara is trouble-free, but watch out for Botrytis blight and Phytophthora blight. If the peony is not flowering it could be it is too young or it is planted too deep or too shallow in the ground or perhaps it is not getting enough sunlight. Paeonia Takara is deer-tolerant and rabbit-tolerant.
