Solanaceae is the Potato Family or the Nightshades Family of plants. It includes about 115 genera and about 2,678 species. Solanaceae is from the order Solanales. Members are annual and perennial herbs, shrubs, trees, vines, and lianas.

Solanaceae family includes not only ornamental plants but there are spices, foods, and agricultural crops. Many are toxic. Some of the better-known family members are eggplants, tomatoes, potatoes, tobacco, and bell peppers. The family is widely distributed except for Antarctica. The greatest concentration is in South America.

Members of the Solanaceae family usually do not have laticifers, saps, or latex. They usually have basal or terminal leaves. Leaves are generally alternate to opposed. They could be leathery or herbaceous. They are petiolate or subsessile. They are seldom aromatic.

The flowers are generally hermaphrodites. The flowers can be solitary or terminal cymose. They are usually actinomorphic. They have a differentiated perianth with calyx and corolla. The stamens grow in multiples of four or five.
