Allium schubertii

Allium schubertii is also known as Schubert’s Allium, Ornamental Onion, Flowering Onion, Tumbleweed Onion, or Persian Onion. It is part of the Amaryllidaceae family of plants. It is native to the Levant region and Lybia. It is a perennial plant that grows from a bulb.

Allium schubertii lives for about 5 years. It has strap-like, bright green leaves that grow in spring and die down before it flowers. The flowers grow on tall stalks. The flowers are star-shaped. They are mauve or light purple. The cluster of flowers appear on varying size of stems. Once they dry down the desert wind blows them around therefore spreading the seeds.

How to grow Allium schubertii:

Grow Allium schubertii in the sun. Plant it in fertile and well-drained soil. Propagate by seed or by offsets. It is generally pest-free or disease-free. Watch out for white rot, and downy mildew.
