The Aizoaceae or Fig-marigold family is from the order of Caryophyllales. It includes about 134 genera and about 1,067 species. This is a family of dicotyledonous plants. They are commonly referred to as Ice Plants, Carpetweeds, or Vygies in South Africa and New Zealand. The family was previously known as Ficoidaceae. Members of Aizoaceae are usually perennials or annuals, they are rarely shrubs or trees.
Aizoaceae members have fleshy globular leaves. Leaves are centric without a bifacial structure. They are opposite or whorled. Ice plants are called that since they have glistening bladder-like cells covering their stems and leaves. Aizoaceae members have bisexual, actinomorphic flowers with 5 sepals usually united at their base. They usually don’t have petals but some have a large number of skinny petals. There is no corona, The stamens are basally connate. They have numerous stamens and ovules. The fruit is a capsule with a large number of seeds.
