Araceae

Araceae or the Arum Family is a family of monocotyledonous plants. It is from the order of Arismatales. Members of this family are also known as Aroids. This family has about 117 genera and 3,368 species. They are mostly from the tropics and northern temperate regions.

Araceae inflorescence usually appears on a spadix which is surrounded by a single leaf-like bract. This bract is called a spathe. Due to this, the flowers of this family are rather popular as cut flowers or as house plants.

Araceae family members are usually rhizomatous or tuberous. The leaves are very different in each species. The flowers have both male and female parts present on the spadix. Male organized at the top and female at lower. In these flowers, the stigma is no longer receptive when the poles are released so it cannot self fertilize. Some members are thermogenic which means they produce heat. When the air gets cold they can still monitor the temperature, sometimes as high as 45ºC or 113ºF. This helps them survive colder weather patterns. The heat also attracts insects to pollinate the plants.

About Online Flower Garden & Dino

I am a flower enthusiast and a gardener at heart. Ever since childhood I loved reading about plants and started gardening at an early age. First by helping my father in the garden and later managing a large garden myself in my teen years. I planted and cared for a large number of plants, flowers, and trees both outdoors and in a greenhouse. To this day I enjoy visiting gardens and parks and learning about new and old specimens and varieties of plants.
